A Hero-n of a day

A Hero-n of a day

The dead branch of a Fremont cottonwood 20 feet in the air, hardly looked like a comfortable place for a giant blue heron to spend a morning. But none-the-less there she was, a far more skilled fisher then us, looking out over our train of hopefuls, as we marched downstream.  She was elegant and patient, our day of luck started with a royal-flush.  I was hiking last, in our group, …

Last week I had the opportunity to teach a fly fishing 101 class. The class consisted of two nights in the shop, one night at the park working on casting, and a day on the river, putting all the elements we covered together. Going over all the nuts and bolts of beginning fly fishing:  rigging, learning knots, entomology, casting, and the other nuances that come with fly fishing c …

The forgetful strikes again

The trip to the Sawtooths over the weekend was inspired by a birthday and a group of us were headed to a place few of us had been to hoot-and-holl …
A Quick Fix

A Quick Fix

This past Saturday I offered to help the Utah Rivers Council raise awareness on a rapidly progressing proposal to dam Temple Fork; a unique Utah stream that feeds the Logan River. Unless we do something and quickly the dam will be built inundating this unique stream and one of it’s tributaries; both vital cold water habitats that will be lost forever. We will also lose one of the states critica …
