There are many fly-fishers that feel fishing in the dead of winter is a foolhardy endeavor. I say, let them continue to think that way; it will mean more fish for the rest of us that know! Winter fishing on our local streams is a reality that more and more Utahn’s are beginning to realize, and for good reason. Our state has a large amount of tail-water fisheries (i.e. rivers and streams that flow out of dams.), which means that these streams rarely freeze over. The open water on these waterways is still teeming with aquatic insect life, and the fish feed on these insects throughout the winter.
The purpose of this class is to teach and show anyone that wants to learn how to fish during the winter how to do so in a safe, fun, and effective manner. This means discussing what weather you should try to fish in, flies, leaders/tippets, safety concerns, etc. In short, this class should prepare you for your future winter outings on your own, and give you the tools to find success during a time of the year where fishing can be tough compared to the Spring, Summer, and Fall.
Due to COVID-19, the format of the class has changed for 2021. This class will consist of a ZOOM evening session, and then a half-day trip out to the river for a hands on experience. The weekday ZOOM session class will run from 6:00 PM-8:30 PM. On Saturday, we will be meeting on the Middle Provo River. Class will run from 10:00 AM-1:30 PM. This class has a maximum student capacity of 4 students, and sign-up is based on a first come, first serve basis. All you will need for the first session of class is a pen and pad of paper for notes. For Saturday's on-the-water session, you'll need all the essential fishing gear (waders, boots, rod/reel, flies, etc.) to be able to get the most out of this class. Get rid of the winter blues, and get out with us to experience Utah’s “forgotten” season!!!
