Larger in size than the Florida Keys, The Jardines de la Reina is an archipelago off the southern side of Cuba. Protected by the Cuban government as a Marine Park, the JDR consists of well preserved and seemingly endless cays, mangrove systems and flats making it a truly special environment for targeting your favorite saltwater species on the fly. The "Gardens of the Queen" is home to trophy Bonefish and Permit though it is largely known for it's Tarpon fishing including a healthy resident population as well as the larger migratory fish, often pushing 100lbs. that grace these waters annually every spring.
While Cuba's rich population of Tarpon have historically been the draw, shots at the Grand Slam are well within reach and anglers will regularly have shots at large Bonefish (4-8lbs and larger) and Permit. Resident & juvenile Tarpon typically fall in to the 15-40lb range and the migratory fish that arrive later into the spring/summer can exceed 100lbs. Each of Avalon's ships have designated fishing zones or "beats" each week allowing water to periodically rest and ensuring that your water won't be crowded or over-fished or even likely to see many other anglers during your full day on the water.
Accommodations on your mothership are outstanding and have repeatedly outdone our expectations! Depending on your ship for the week, you'll have options for comfortable double occupancy rooms or single suites each with air conditioning, private bathrooms (with hot & cold water) and ample storage. A large dining hall hosts breakfasts of coffee, fresh fruit and eggs and nightly dinners regularly feature a fantastic spread of fresh-caught seafood, soups, traditional rice & bean dishes as well as pork, beef and other dishes rotating nightly. Beer, Wine & Rum drinks (as well as soft-drinks & bottled water) are included and readily available at the open air bar on the top deck making it the perfect venue to share stories from the day over a beverage or cigar.
For many years travel to Cuba has been in a state of flux with changing regulations though right now it has never been easier. All connections are through the Miami International Airport where you'll board a quick flight to Camaguey, Cuba. Upon landing in Cuba, you'll take a connecting bus to the port town of Jucaro where you'll board your ship. During the 3-4 hour boat ride to the JDR you'll enjoy dinner, drinks and gear up for fishing the next morning.
