Spanish Language for the Traveling Angler

Spanish Language for the Traveling Angler

Anyone who's stood on the bow of a flats boat with fly in hand and unblinking eyes focused on ghostly marine shadows knows things can get real crazy real fast when one of those shadows verifies. With a guide on the platform doing their best to quickly communicate in broken English to a flyfisher up front simultaneously trying to spot the fish and process the guide's instruction, a flyfisher's challenges begin well before they make their first backcast. Our Spanish language class aims to lessen this challenge a bit and to enhance the overall experience of travelers visiting a Spanish speaking destination. Interactions are more rich and rapport more efficiently built when a visitor uses the local language regardless of skill level.

Conceived as a pre-trip crash course in conversational Spanish for flyfishers headed to Spanish-speaking fisheries like Mexico, Belize, Cuba, and Argentina. No prior knowledge needed and we encourage folks of any skill level to participate; varied experiences will enhance the class. Arrive with questions and areas of interest. Or don't. We'll meet you where your at and provide the necessary guidance and direction to make the most of your time. We'll offer choice for practice strategies that will include person-to-person conversation, rote pronunciation practice, addressing grammar questions, completing tasks in target language, etc. If you have an idea, please share it. Our class will likely be enriched by class participants who have already fished in the countries mentioned above (and others).

This class is not only beneficial to anglers and all are welcomed! Inquire about our recurring Spanish classes to continue learning after this course or continue building your existing spanish foundations.

Itinerary

The class will meet in store, classroom style and cover three primary areas of development:

Vocabulary: Identify high frequency words for general use and strategies for making the most of whatever words you do know. We'll also cover fishing- specific vocabulary and phrases.

Strategies and Practice: Gotta use what you know! Employ single words, simple phrases, and full sentences in conversation. Performance anxiety hinders many language learners; adequate practice time, best practices, and practical strategies aim to alleviate this challenge.

Language structure: just a touch of nerdiness to help you identify Spanish-English parallels and divergences. Use what you already know about English to frame your Spanish language understanding.
